I decided I had to blog this before I went on to finish my earlier post.
I have just finished reading an article about a Dalit mother and her daughter being paraded naked, brutally raped and eventually killed.I am in a very pathetic state of mind now, with goosebumps all over me. I just cannot muster enough courage to even put down the sinking feeling within me.
For years we have had ambassadors of goodwill and brand building making all plausible efforts to portray to the western world that India is not only about snake-charmers and gaudy politics.
However, In India , we as Indians know better that such instances are not rare and uncommon.Being poor in India is a bane, and being a Dalit is a curse which one cannot overcome at least in this life.I am not an advocate of caste-system but I am a woman of the new world.
Today as I read the article I could feel the trauma that the women of that family must have felt at the time they were being mauled and marauded in front of a very happy and curious audience.Such atrocity is unpardonable and absolutely uncalled for. However if the people who are supposed to give justice are the perpetrators themself then what choice are the hapless souls left with.
In this particular incident there are supposedly no witnesses to the crime even though they know deep down that they were very much there to enjoy someone else's grief.
Everytime we have someone taking India forward we manage to come up with someone somewhere who pulls us umpteen steps backward. As we move on, we try to push such instances under the carpet. Its like a very clean table with messy clutterd drawers. What is visible to the outside is cleanliness but the reality is inside the drawers.
India is moving forward at a very fast pace , so much so that the weaker sections of the society are not able to keep pace.We have a very popular saying in India "Jiski laathi uski bhains" which in-effect means that the ones with power always get the upper hand. Our people don't want to forget this at all.We know why.
But venting anger and spewing vengeance on the weak and the downtrodden is not the solution.
