After reading this piece of news today, I did not know whether to feel bad for the Muslims, or to feel good for the Christians.
Switzerland is a predominantly Christian country.
I was born a Hindu, but received my early religious information from the Church as I studied in a Convent.
Secular upbringing made me respect all religions, but somehow in the growing years of adulthood, I could never reconcile myself to the Muslim ideology.
Why should there be only one god whose name is Allah?
Why can't everybody have their own interpretations of their own God?
Why can't God be just one "Anonymous" Supreme Power?
My God is my source of strength and resides within me.
Why do we have to give him a name?
Can we not be Spiritual rather than Religious for a change?
I have been living in France since 4 years now, but somehow the presence of the Muslim genealogy in this european society has created ripples here too inspite of France being a secular state.
While countries thrive on immigrants, in the process they do stand to either lose or add-on to their own cullture.
But when the immigrants are Muslims, things need to be seen and understood from a very different perpective.
One can easily make out the difference between the different European cultures based on the presence or absence of these certain elements.
France is increasingly becoming prone to the Muslim backlash however slight that may be, and Switzerland's ban on minarets is sure to find a backlash in France too.
We have still not forgotten the Paris riots of 2006, and the very recent controversy which abounded when the President suggested a Ban on the Burka.
The Bottomline still remains: Is it possible to build a Church,Temple or Monastry in any Muslim country? If not, then why this objection to the Ban on building minarets?

Agreed.
One should keep in mind that Islam was conjured back in the medieval ages in the deserts by the bedouins, who in turn had very strict and brutal laws.As ages passes, people lost their sense and stopped using logic leading to the blind following of the religion (just like we Hindu's have castes) there by complicating issues in the rapidly advancing world. Imagine Bedouin laws in Hi-Tech cities, it's all crap. People should learn to respect other people, therein lies true God.
Peace of mind leads to ultimate knowledge. And God is the name we have given for the tool to achieve this.
I should say, a well thought out post!
You've earned a fan in me :)
Cheers
its a shame. Democracy is not about majority wise its about protection of minority liberty. Swiz always claims to be neutral but didn't stop doing business with Hitler (and present day evil) but now 'so called' neutral policy doesn't apply on this.
